Independent means that parents are free from the influence of government education. Parents become their children's sole educators, independent of the dictates and mandated agendas in government schools.

In homeschool, independent continues to mean that parents teach their child one-on-one and decide the time, method, and style for educating that is most energizing and rewarding for the family.
